Hey!
I know you are all waiting to hear how long "la
roca" lasted and how well I did on my Spanish this week. I only got the
rock twice! And it lasted for 3 solid days before we got completely
exhausted of trying to use Spanish. We stopped using it for a few days
and we will start up again soon. I was pretty excited about how much I
could actually say though. It was awesome! I will say that there were at
least two times that "la roca" landed on someone's toe. Now it is a
joke but at the time it happened I really felt bad for the Elder. His
face turned bright red. I was impressed he was able to compose his
scream and sucked in the pain. Ouch!
Last night we had a Devotional that I thought was really awesome.
He talked about missionary work after the mission. He shared a few
stories but his main point was this. A lot of the time we try to
convince non-members that they NEED the gospel and that is true, but the
stories he shared were about the opposite. He said that as much as they
need the gospel, the church needs them. One story he shared was
about home teaching. For months this home teacher would go over to the
assigned house and knock on the door. The home teachie would come out and
yell "get off my property and don't come back," but like I said this went
on for months. One day this storm hit Salt Lake City and tore a roof
off of a building. The brother was assigned to gather people to go fix
it. As he went door to door he stopped in front of his home teachie's
house. He knocked and the same thing happened but this time the home
teachie said "i am not here to teach you the gospel but I need your
help." He explained the situation and this guy ended up helping. Through
this process he found that there were lots of opportunities to help out
in the church and evenutally joined the church.
He shared a few other stories about people who had turned away the
gospel for years but as the gospel needed them they were able to see the
good it brought. I had never thought about this before but it is a very
good point and a key thing to think about it. Instead of telling people
why the gospel can bless their lives it is wise to think why the gospel
needs them. If you think about it, everyone wants to feel needed and
important! Everyone wants to share the things they are good at! I can't
wait to use this after my mission and maybe during too!
Last thing, in church we are asked to speak seconds before we are
to speak. Every week we prepare a talk just in case we are called on.
This week the topic was on the Holy Ghost. My favorite topic! I found a
story in 3 Nephi 19. The 12 disciples are teaching the people the things
they just learned from Christ after he visited with them. After they
were taught they kneeled down in prayer (verse 8 and 9). They pray for
one thing. They want nothing more then the Holy Ghost. Then in verse 13
and 14 after they are baptized they are encircled by fire and recieve
the Holy Ghost. It is amazing to see this happen it a short few verses
but I really loved this story. I had heard it before but this time I
learned a lot more about the people and thier true desires to have
something I have had since I was 8. Anyway, guess what, I had to speak. I
ended up speaking for a good 5 minutes but mostly because I don't know
how to pronounce everything. My Branch President said he could
understand me which was a relief. I am glad that I don't have to stress
about next week and this really was a good talk for me since I was able
to find a lot I wanted to share. It is so interesting being called on
spot though! I better get used to it! I better run!
Love you all!
